Why is My Tattoo Gun Getting Hot?

Problem 01: Too weak throw

Weak

A tattoo machine needle should move up and down when operating.

If you experience slowly or not moving needle issue even when you are increasing the voltage. Be sure that the problem is happening due to the back spring.

Due to less tension in the back spring, the needle is barely moving.

Fix: Increase tension of back spring by bending it forward.

The back spring screw needs to be loosened. Rotate the back and front spring or armor bar assembly so that the front spring faces down to the other side of the frame. Once you bend the back spring downward, more tension will get created. Make sure to do this a little because a little is enough. Place the assembly to its exact position and give a well-tight.

Problem 02: I am losing my grip

Grip

It may happen because of 3 possible reasons. Below are the reasons and the fixation process discussed.

Reason 01:

Proper tightening in the hex bolts on the grip and the tube on a 3-piece metal tube assembly is necessary. Due to the improper tightening in these areas, you will lose your grip. Aluminum or stainless steel is used to make these hex bolts. They may get worn when you use them for the long term.

Fix 01:

To get the hex bolts to clamp onto the tube, it is significantly essential to give a well-tight to them. While tightening the bolts, be careful to avoid stripping at the bolt head. Stripping head will lead you to a new tattoo machine problem.

Reason 02:

If your tube vice thumb screw is tightened, but the tube and grip are not seeming so, as it may be that your thumb screw is not getting as tight as the point at which it goes into the frame.

Fix 02:

With the help of a space washer, you can fix the problem. It is advisable to go with a plastic washer instead of metal. It is because when you provide tightening to the washer, plastic compresses more compared to metal.

Reason 03:

If you still face problems after following the above 2 fixation process, check the thumb screw thread.

Characteristically, the screw thread tip wears down faster. It happens because tattoo artists provide well-tight to the screw thread.

Fix 03:

Replacing the old thumb screw is the only solution to this problem.

Problem 03: My tattoo machine is not working when I assemble it after disassembling

Best Handmade Tattoo Machine

A tattoo artist can assemble and disassemble a tattoo machine for many reasons. Thorough cleaning of the tattoo machine requires complete disassembly of the device. And if you are disassembling your machine or the first time, you may face this problem.

Fix:

Tattoo machines have several parts in it. When disassembling a tattoo machine: note down how a specific washer is faced and get the orientation of a screw.

For example, tattoo machines have back and top binding post screws. Both screws are insulated with the help of either a rubber or plastic screw.

Every hybrid tattoo gun kit comes with a regular washer at one side and an elongated plastic tube washer at another side. The end of the plastic tube washer has to go into the frame. Due to this tube, the screw threading becomes insulated, and electricity can’t pass to the frame.

Also, one thing you have to make sure of, the coil/capacitor assembly’s 2 circular connectors must be connected with the back and top binding spot. If their position is behind the plastic washer, efficient work can’t be done by your tattoo machine.

Problem 04: I am experiencing in and out performance from my tattoo machine

This can happen due to the tattoo machine circuit’s weak connection somewhere with the machine.

Fix:

In order to fix the problem, you have to understand why a weak connection happens.

It may happen when you disassemble your machine, circuit connections can get damaged. Small solder joints are used to attach the wires with the machine and wires are thin too. The device will show in and out performance when any of the joints get broken.

There might be another reason like if the clip cord can’t make a proper connection. When oxidation happens in the contact point, it may happen. Fixing this oxidation is so simple. Take sandpaper and sand down the contact point carefully.

However, if you experience in and out performance from your tattoo machine to a certain angle, be sure that the problem is happening because the clip cord is not making the full connection.

Problem 05: Without turning up the voltage to the maximum speed, my machine is not running

Voltage

This problem occurs because of the same reason that we see in the Problem # 1. Fixation process will also be similar to Problem # 1.

Fix:

The back spring screw needs to be loosened. Rotate the back and front spring or armor bar assembly so that the front spring faces down to the other side of the frame. Once you bend the back spring downward, more tension will get created. Make sure to do this a little because a little is enough. Place the assembly to its exact position and give a well-tight.

Problem 06: My tattoo machine is sparking between the contact screw and front spring

sparking

Sparking is a common thing in every tattoo machine. But when it is excessive, you have to find the root cause and get a solution for this.

Excess sparking may happen when the rear spring becomes too stiff. Also, the installation of a new spring that has bad capacitors can make the problem worse.

We have 3 fixes in this problem.

Fix 01: Tightening the rear screw

This fixation process is opposite to the Problem # 1 fixation process.

The back spring screw needs to be loosened. Rotate the back and front spring or armor bar assembly so that the front spring faces down to the other side of the frame. Once you bend the back spring upward, less tension will get created. Make sure to do this a little because a little is enough. Place the assembly to its exact position and give a well-tight.

Fix 02: First-hand front spring

Major fixation is not mandatory in this problem. Once the machine starts working at its full, the plating layer will get removed by the contact screw. And thus sparking will stop. If your tattoo machine is entirely fresh and sparking, this is the best solution.

Fix 03: Wrong capacitor

If your tattoo machine is equipped with a faulty capacitor, sparking will happen. Higher uF capacitor is necessary for shaders and liners delivers the best result with a lower uF capacitor.

Problem 07: Why my skin is getting chewed by the tattoo needles

This problem happens due to 2 reasons.

Crooked assembly of the machines spring or armature bar.

Messed up frame geometry.

Fix:

Assembly of the spring and armature bar is so straightforward. All you need to do is, ensure proper connection between the front and back spring. And the armature is positioned in such a way to the straight line of the back blinding post. However, with the help of tools, you can ensure this factor, eyeballing is just okay to confirm this.

On the other hand, it is your bad luck if messed up frame geometry happens. Place your machine on a flat surface and take a look at it from the top to understand if the machine is bent. A bent tattoo machine comes with bad geometry.

If bending the frame is possible, move to the next troubleshoot of this list.

Problem 08: My grip is coming out of a slant tube vise

Poor geometry is the main culprit of this problem.

Fix:

This fixation process is a bit challenging, and it is not recommended because you can mess up with the machine frame. But if you want to proceed, it is advisable to get a tube and grip made of stainless steel. Ensure well tightening of it to the tube vise.

Notice which side the slant is on. Take a clean towel and put it on a solid table. The tattoo machine needs to be placed on the table so that there is decent leverage against the slant with the position with which you want the tube grip to move downwards. The grip needs to be held gently and give a press to its downward. Minimum bend of the grip will help you to solve the problem.

Problem 09: Why is my tattoo gun getting hot

High voltage, too much tension in the springs or armature set up or heavy gauge springs are the main culprits of tattoo guns getting hot problem.

Fix 01: Decreasing the tension of the spring and armature bar

The back spring screw needs to be loosened. Rotate the back and front spring or armor bar assembly so that the front spring faces down to the other side of the frame. Once you bend the back spring upward, less tension will get created. Make sure to do this a little because a little is enough. Place the assembly to its exact position and give a well-tight.

Fix 02: Lowering the voltage

If the machine doesn’t provide the best result without its maximum voltage, there might be a problem in the tuning process.

Lowering the voltage is necessary at this point. For this, spring tension needs to be adjusted or adjust the front spring gap and to the contact screw.

Problem 10: The machine loses power after a promising start

Low-quality clip cord, lousy capacitor or oxidization in the contact point is the reason for this issue.

Fix: Replacing the capacitor.

Look for a suitable capacitor in your nearest store. Another fresh or new capacitor or setup of the full coil will allow you to solve the problem quite conveniently.

Fix: Replacing the foot pedal and clip cord.

Undoubtedly, foot pedal and clip cords will show bad performance over time, especially here and there yanking of the wire will damage foot pedal and clip cords soon.

Confirm replacing the foot pedal and clip cord at this point.

Fix: Cleaning contact points oxidization.

Fixing this oxidation is so simple. Take sandpaper and sand down the contact point carefully.

Contact screw, clip cord and front spring require scheduled maintenance with sandpaper to avoid oxidation.
